Oh-ho-ho! Kakariki had himself a very bad day!
Kakariki and friends step through the magic door, and poof!—sand! Sand everywhere! All up in Kakariki’s fur! Yuck! Little camels walking by, merchants needing help, big scary desert… but Kakariki is a big strong warrior (yes yes), so Kakariki says, “Let’s go, Blaze! Time to be heroes!”
Then— BOOM!!! Big, big, big worm explodes from the sand! With big teeth! And a bigger appetite! It tries to eat Kakariki and Blaze, but Blaze is too fast! Kakariki? …Eh. Not so lucky. Plop! Into the big nasty worm belly. It is very stinky in here. Bad day.
But Kakariki is smart! Kakariki is brave! He drink potion. He pull out sword. He… stab himself instead. Why is inside-of-worm so wiggly? No fair!
Then—Blaaargh! Worm spits Kakariki out like old leftovers! Ow. But no time for whining! Worm still hungry! It eats Kakariki again! This time, Kakariki just sits. Accepts fate. Maybe he lives in worm belly now. Cozy.
Outside, Blaze is very mad! Blaze bites worm, bites hard! Friends keep shooting, blasting, smashing! Then BOOM!!! Big brain Tobias uses mind tricks, KABOOM! Worm goes bye-bye. Kakariki and Renaldine go flying! Again.
Kakariki spits out sand. Sits up. Laughs. “Blaze, Kakariki thinks he broke a rib. Or three.”
Blaze growls.
“Blaze says Kakariki is bad at this.”
…He is not wrong.
But hey! Worm is dead! Kakariki wins! We take worm’s key, get some loot, and—oh! Kakariki very sleepy now. Nap time. No more worm today, yes yes.
Private Notes
- We step through an archway into the Earthen Elemental Wing, and we find ourselves in a sprawling desert, with dunes and peaks scattered around. It's mostly rolling hills of sand. In front of us is a small track through the sand. We gather that people likely travel here by cart, camelback or wooly mammoths.
- As we step onto a dune, we turn around and hear the sounds of a small train of camels carrying goods and the vendors who wish to sell them. We need to escort these merchants safely across the desert.
- Calanthia notices that much of the rocky area has been disturbed. There has been recent activity in the area. She tells the party and immediately hides.
- Tobias uses his powers to manifest Tremor Sense. He takes the lead.
- Tobias warns us to stop moving as he senses something ahead, but he isn't sure what. It stopped moving when he did.
- Suddenly, with a burst of sand and stone, a gargantuan greatworm appears. INITIATIVE!!!
- Calanthia unleashes a barrage of extremely hard-hitting bolt shots from her crossbows, and all three attacks hit. Then she ducks behind a rock.
- The purple worm uses its villain action to use its Open the Earth ability, which opens a huge fissure in the ground below us along the trail. This can only go well. Tobias and Blaze make their saves and are able to hop to the side of the fissure before falling in, but Kakariki, Renaldine and the camels aren't so lucky, falling 40' down and taking some damage in the process.
- Tobias manifests Iron on himself, giving himself some extra hit points and AC as well as a couple extra attacks.
- Kakariki stands up and begins trudging his way up the steep incline of this fissure to escape it. Meanwhile, he sends Blaze charging forth toward the worm and has him attack it, doing a bit of damage. Kakariki turns his attention on the worm and fires his crossbow, missing wildly.
- It's the worm's turn. It burrows and resurfaces along the southern edge of the fissure next to Renaldine and Kakariki. It turns its attention onto Kakariki, hitting him squarely, doing some acid damage and grappling him. This isn't looking good for Kakariki. It makes a couple attacks against Renaldine, but misses both. It then swallows Kakariki. He's now Restrained and Blinded, but hey, at least he isn't Grappled anymore! However, he WILL take 8d6 acid damage each turn until he dies or somehow escapes this thing's gullet.
- Renaldine casts Spirit Guardians.
- At the end of Renaldine's turn, the worm uses Earth Breach, targeting Calanthia with a whirlpool of sand appearing below her. She's able to dexterously avoid it, watching as the worm surfaces, missing her, and sinking back down into the sand below.
- Calanthia readies herself for the next time the worm appears, at which point she'll unleash another barrage of attacks.
- Tobias is up next. He manifests his Shadow Form, transforming himself into a shadow form.
- Kakariki's turn. Blaze rampages toward Renaldine but isn't able to make it to hit her thankfully. Kakariki casts Haste on himself, perhaps a stupid move, but desperate times call for desperate measures and all. Kakariki drinks his Greater Healing potion and attempts to attack it from the inside using his longsword, but ends up just poking himself instead. This is not going well for little Kakariki.
- At the end of Kakariki's turn, the worm uses its Better Out Than In ability. It surfaces, triggering Calanthia's held attacks. She fires off some bolts from her crossbows, doing some really good damage in the process. The worm continues its action afterward. It blasts acid in a 60' cone in front of it, hitting Renaldine and Blaze. Renaldine takes all the damage, and Blaze takes half as he made his save. Kakariki is regurgitated as part of this action, being thrown forward, taking 22 damage and being knocked prone.
- Now it's the worm's actual turn. It moves down toward the three of us. It takes some damage for entering Renaldine's Spirit Guardians. It then lashes out with its tongues again, hitting both Renaldine and Kakariki this time. We're both grappled. It then swallows Renaldine, beginning her trip down into its gullet. Been there, done that.
- While in its gullet, Renaldine uses Word of Radiance, but the worm makes its save, taking no damage unfortunately.
- Calanthia is up next. She moves so she's within line of sight of the worm and fires off more bolts into the worm doing more massive damage to the creature. Nice!
- Tobias is up now. He attempts to manifest a 4th Order power, and does so successfully, manifesting Gravitational Collapse on the worm, dealing 48 force damage. You do NOT want to be on Tobias's bad side.
- Kakariki's turn. Kakariki is incapacitated thanks to failing the concentration check on Haste last turn when he was regurgitated, but Blaze can still attack. Blaze attacks, doing some piercing damage.
- The worm is next. It swallows Kakariki again. Whee. It then moves away, giving Blaze an opportunity attack, but he misses. The worm turns its sights on Tobias, grappling him and doing some acid damage to him as well. Tobias uses his Fortify ability to prevent some of the damage. The worm then uses a tongue sweep ability, flinging Tobias around, doing more damage to him. This worm is HANGRY.
- Renaldine's up. She takes massive acid damage thanks to having been swallowed. She casts Life Tether, but the worm uses its Slowed, Not Stopped ability to prevent it, but its speed and tongue reach are now reduced by 10' until it finishes a Long Rest.
- Calanthia is up. She unleashes yet another massive barrage of bolts at the worm, critting one one of her three attacks. Nice!
- Tobias is up next. Still grappled, he upcasts a power, but misses his roll to prevent taking Strain, causing him to take all six Strain. Ouch. But the power still manifests. He unleashes a massive Gravitational Collapse on the worm, doing an insane amount of damage to it as it fails its save against it and he uses his Destructive Power ability to increase the damage. 73 DAMAGE! Wow! He takes more Strain in doing so, but he very nearly kills the worm.
- At the end of Tobias's turn, the worm regurgitates Renaldine and Kakariki in another 60' cone. Ouch.
- Kakariki's up next. Blaze nearly enters a Rampage, but Kakariki is able to prevent it, even while prone on the sand. Kakariki sends Blaze up to the worm and uses his Chains From Hell exploit, nearly restraining the worm, but the worm chooses to succeed. However, it still takes half the fire damage, which kill it! Combat over.
- We inform the group of vendors that we need to take a long rest before continuing.
- We do find the key for this wing of the archmage's sanctum on the worm.
- We also make sure to search for any loot.
- We take our long rest. TNGBU.
That's it for this session!
