Kakariki’s Super-Duper Journal: The Baby-Gremlin Devourer, The Door Trick, & The Giant Undead Dracolich!
Oh-ho-ho! What a crazy, super-duper intense day for Team Gilded Iron!
First things first: Kemurial gave a three-count—one, two, three!—and opened the double doors on the eastern side. It was a tiny little sally-port room lined with seven spooky stone sarcophagi and a weird, ugly monster carved into the far wall that looked just like a grumpy baby gremlin! Kemurial whispered, "Careful, that thing is going to move!"
And boy, did it ever! Surprise attack!
The Baby Gremlin & The Closed-Door Trick!
Right away, a spooky wraith popped out of the wall and woke up a wight from a sarcophagus!
-
Tobias used his awesome brain-magic to teleport Zhanis right forward with her spinning holy angel-blades glowing bright and pretty!
-
Kemurial popped the wraith away with a POOF! and slashed the baby-gremlin devourer with his super-shiny scimitar!
-
Kakariki and Blaze rushed in! Kakariki fired glowing sling-stones (PEW-PEW!) and Blaze leaped forward, knocking the devourer flat on its bottom with a ferocious bite!
Then the ugly baby-gremlin let out a giant, crying wail that woke up every single wight in all the sarcophagi! But right after it wailed, it stumbled straight into Zhanis's spinning angel-blades and POP! It died right on the spot! Serves that noisy baby right!
Meanwhile, four wights swarmed Tobias, but Tobias did the craziest, smartest trick ever: he used his psychic powers to teleport all four wights right back into the spinning angel-blades, and then SLAMMED THE DOOR SHUT RIGHT IN THEIR FACES! BAM!
While Kakariki was dropping his zooming speed magic (which makes Kakariki super sleepy and out-of-breath for a tiny second), Blaze had a little bit too much zoomy ferocity and accidentally gave Zhanis-friend a little nibble on the leg! Oops! Sorry, Zhanis-friend! But as soon as Kakariki woke back up, we all teamed up with readied attacks, and when Kemurial dropped his banishing magic, KABOOM! The last wraith was squished into dust!
The Giant Cavern & The Dracolich!
We kept exploring past the portcullis and found a giant, echoing cavern with a forty-foot ceiling and the enormous skeleton of some ancient beast lying on the floor.
Suddenly, the ground started rumbling! The tunnel behind us CRUMBLED shut, and rising up from the cavern floor was a massive, terrifying, flying undead dragon—A DRACOLICH!
-
Tobias cast a super-cool time-magic spell that gave everyone glowing speed superpowers while slowing down the dragon!
-
The Dracolich breathed a giant wave of freezing death-magic right at us—OUCHIE!—and flew up into the air.
-
Kakariki and Blaze attacked super fast, but the dragon did a nasty pounce and slashed Blaze so hard that my poor fiery puppy fell unconscious and took a little sleepy nap on the ground! Oh no! My brave puppy!
-
Kemurial tried to cast a healing spell on Blaze, but the dragon had a spooky anti-healing magic zone that stopped all magical healing nearby! Oh, no, no, no!
-
Zhanis hurled a giant holy-light scroll, and Tobias blasted the dragon with a giant brain-overload beam!
The dragon tried to zap Zhanis with a scary death-ray spell, leaving her barely hanging on! But Blaze made a brave recovery, and then Kemurial swung his scimitar with a mighty giant-strike... and KABOOM! KILLED IT DEAD! Kemurial even threw a quickened magic-blast just to make sure it turned into sparkly purple dust! Yay, Team Gilded Iron!
Rescuing Blaze & The Secret Vampire Sylvania Plan!
As soon as the dragon turned to dust, the fallen rock wall crumbled back open, giving us a clear path out!
Kakariki knelt beside Blaze, letting his sweet puppy rest peacefully for just a moment before channeling all his druidic powers for one whole minute to bring him back to life! Blaze popped right back up, good as new, wiggling his smoky snout and feeling happy. (Kakariki got a little tired and took a tiny exhaustion nap later, but it was totally worth it for his best friend!)
We searched the cavern and found amazing loot:
-
An awesome Omenbringer's Mantle!
-
A Puzzle Ring of Vitality, Life, and Power for Kemurial!
-
A shiny magic breastplate!
-
A container of Sovereign Glue (super sticky!)
-
And some incredible Dracolich Dragon Armor with anti-death protection for Tobias!
We let the Duke and his guards know the catacombs are totally safe now. Ulrika and the scholars can finally move in to do their research!
And we learned three super-important secrets:
-
If we want to find a real cure for Ulrika, we have to go to Sylvania!
-
The old noble houses living in Sylvania are actually secret (well, non-secret) vampires, and we might find allies there!
-
That mean artifact Krieger had is called the Eye of Khemri (or the Eye of Nagash)—an ancient talisman from Nehekhara tied to the very first necromancer that controls all undead everywhere!
We decided our next big adventure is heading straight to Sylvania to save Ulrika!
After two days of resting up and eating yummy snacks, Kakariki's tummy feels great, all his exhaustion is gone, and we are ready for the next big adventure! Yes, yes!
Private Notes
- Kemurial gives a three-count before opening the double doors on the eastern side of the room. He does so, then he and Zhanis step inside.
- It leads to a very small corridor, more like a sally port. He opens the second set of double doors.
- Seven sarcophagi line the walls of the chamber ahead. Set into the far wall is a monstrous creature. It looks like a carving, but Kemurial's Perception is good enough to know that this thing is very likely to animate upon some kind of trigger. It kind of looks like a baby gremlin. Kemurial whispers to us that he thinks there's a construct across the way from us. As we make our way into the room, the creature at the end begins to move, as expected. INITIATIVE!!!
-
Round 1
- Wraith - Moves into view from inside the wall, places hand on a sarcophagus, which animates a Wight.
- Tobias - Runs forward to Kemurial and uses Jaunt to teleport Zhanis forward with her Spirit Guardians still active from last fight. Both creatures fail their saves, taking full damage. Then Tobias manifests Minor Acceleration on Kemurial.
- Kemurial -Moves up to the Devourer and casts Banishment on the Wraith. It fails its save, so it's gone for a minute. Nice move! Hasted Action to attack the Devourer. He hits, and since it's the first time he's attacked it this combat, it does max damage.
- Kakariki - Shoot the Devourer, hit, Wrath of the Pack, hit, can't be knocked Prone. Do all that again, hit, Wrath of the Pack, hit, still can't be Knocked Prone. Hasted attack misses. Blaze's own Action to attack, which hits.
- Devourer - Lets out a huge wail as it uses Soul Rend. Everyone but Kemurial saves. The wail wakes the remainder of the Wights in each sarcophagus. Here we go. But then it ends its turn in the Spirit Guardians, fails its save and dies. Serves him right!
- Wraith - Appears behind Tobias and attacks him, but misses.
- Wight - Moves up to Tobias and misses with Necrotic Sword.
- Zhanis - Toll the Dead on a Wight, and it fails its save. Does it again as a Bonus Action, it fails again. Obviously these are resistant to Necrotic damage.
-
Round 2
- Wights - One does Life Drain on Zhanis, but she saves. Necrotic Sword swing at her misses as well, then moves toward Tobias, provoking from Zhanis and Kemurial. Kemurial chooses not to do anything, and Zhanis misses her attack. Another one targets Zhanis with its Necrotic Bow, missing, then moves up to Tobias, missing with Necrotic Sword. Another one does exactly the same, missing Zhanis, and then targets Tobias with Life Drain. Tobias saves. Another one moves up to Zhanis, uses Life Drain, she fails her Constitution Save, taking some Necrotic damage and reducing her HP max by that much as well, but maintains her Concentration. It then moves away and fires its bow at Zhanis, which would crit, but she can't be crit thanks to her Adamantine armor, and she continues to maintain her Concentration. Another one aims its bow at Zhanis, missing both times, then moves between Tobias and Kakariki.
- Wraith - Banished.
- Tobias - Manifests a 4th Order Elsewhere power, fails the manifestation check taking four points of Strain, and teleports the four Wights surrounding him back into the Spirit Guardians. They all fail their saves, taking full damage. Nice! Bonus Action to use his last Psychic Boost to remove six Strain from himself, to a total of four Strain now. He then closes the door right in front of him.
- Wight - Disengages and runs west out of the Spirit Guardians.
- Kemurial - Uses Metamagic to Transmute a Fireball into an Acidball, aiming at the wall so as to prevent it from hitting allies. All but two fail their save, taking out one and doing massive damage to others. Nice! Steps forward and uses Hasted Attack to attack a Wight. First time, so it's max damage, killing it, then moves a bit further forward.
- Kakariki - Blaze moves up to a Wight. Kakariki steps into sight and fires some shots. First one hits, Wrath of the Pack, Blaze hits and knocks it Prone. Second attack hits another target, but not enough Ferocity for another Wrath of the Pack. Hasted Attack hits. Blaze's own attack hits the Prone target and kills it.
- Wraith - Attacks Kakariki, misses, and moves back into the room behind us.
- Wight - Moves up to Kemurial, attacks twice, missing both times, then moves away, provoking, Kemurial kills it.
- Zhanis - Sacred Flame on a Wight twice, it fails both saves, taking some good Radiant damage, which is enough to kill it. Moves up, catching a Wight in her Spirit Guardians, it fails its save, taking full damage.
-
Round 3
- Wraith - Banished.
- Tobias - Moves up, uses Iron to attack the remaining Wight, hitting and killing it.
- Kemurial - Lets us know the Banished Wraith is still banished for a bit longer, then moves to the previous room to check for the other Wraith that Kakariki mentioned. He opens the door, sees the Wraith, and attacks it with Booming Blade on his scimitar, doing massive damage do it. He pumps a Divine Smite into it for extra damage. The Booming Blade means if it willingly moves, it will take further Thunder damage. Hasted Attack hits and kills it. Just one to go.
- Kakariki - Moves up to the portcullis and flips the switch to open it. Then he moves away from the portcullis and sends Blaze into the room. He warns the rest of the party that he is about to drop his Haste, which will make him lethargic for a few seconds, with hope that they all move into the room where the Wraith is banished and protect him while lethargic. Then he drops his Concentration on Haste, and becomes Incapacitated for a turn.
- Zhanis - Moves into the portcullis room.
-
Round 4
- Wraith - Banished.
- Tobias - Moves up and targets himself with Minor Acceleration, allowing him to move a little further, and then manifests Incinerate in the location the Wraith was banished from. He tells Kemurial we're all ready for him to drop the Banishment spell.
- Kemurial - Moves into the room and gives everyone a turn to Ready an attack for when he drops his concentration on the Banishment.
- Kakariki - Blaze gains Ferocity, which is enough to put him into a Rampage. But Kakariki is incapacitated currently and can't do anything to stop it, so Blaze Rampages. Unfortunately, the only target he can attack is the nearest creature, which happens to be Zhanis. Blaze bites Zhanis, and would crit if she could be crit. It does some damage though. Oops! Then Blaze moves five feet in preparation for the Wraith to appear. Then his turn ends, which ends Incapacitated.
- Zhanis - Readies an attack on the Wraith for when Banishment drops.
-
Round 5
-
Round 6
- Wraith - Banished.
- Tobias - Ready.
- Kemurial - Drops Concentration on Banishment. Spirit Guardians happens first, it fails its save, taking damage. Then Incinerate, fails its save, takes damage. Tobias punches with Iron, hitting twice. Kemurial attacks with his scimitar and hits for max damage. Kakariki's attacks go off, killing it.
- Combat over.
-
- Zhanis's Spirit Guardians drops, as does Tobias's Iron.
- We decide to take a moment and look for loot in this room and the previous one. We find some stuff, including gold.
- We continue into the areas we haven't yet explored. Past the portcullis room, we find a large cavernous room with a giant skeleton of a creature inside. The ceiling in here is about 40' high.
- Suddenly, as Zhanis contemplates casting a spell to restore her lowered HP maximum, the cavern begins rumbling, the tunnel behind us collapses, and we see rising from the cavern floor a huge undead dragon making its presence known. INITIATIVE!!!
-
Round 1
- The first thing we notice is that we feel a draining effect, but we're not quite sure what it's affecting.
- Tobias - Manifests Ally of Time. When we start our turn inside the area, we get Accelerate, which is +2 to AC, advantage on Dex saves, and an additional action, and enemies gain the effects of Slow, basically. SICK! Manifests 4th Order Amplify on Kakariki, which gives him some extra Psychic damage on his next attack. End of turn, Dracolich's Legendary Action to use Terrifying Presence. Only Blaze needs to make the save, and saves. The rest of us are immune to Frightened and Psychic damage thanks to Mind Blank!
- Dracolich - Is Decelerated thanks to Ally of Time, uses Necrotic Breath attack toward the cave opening, catching Tobias, Zhanis, Blaze and Kakariki within it. We all fail our saves, taking full damage. OUCH. He then flies up to 25' above the ground.
- Kakariki - Kakariki and Blaze both immediately gain Accelerate from Ally of Time. Nice! Kakariki fires his sling at the dragon, hitting. Has Blaze attack, and hits, then uses Hellish Wound to apply one stack of DoT damage. Kakariki's second attack hits, as does his Accelerated attack (using True Strike because it allows for that!). Blaze's second attack also hits. End of turn, Legendary Action to Pounce, making a Rend attack on Blaze, which hits and knocks him Unconscious, causing him to drop to the ground, immediately failing one Death Save.
- Kemurial - Gains Accelerate. Casts Conjure Minor Elementals of the acid variety on himself, then flies up to the Dracolich and tries to cast Healing Word on Blaze, but it doesn't work thanks to the Dracolich's Life Suppression feature, which suppresses all healing within 60' of the dragon. Oof! Then he attacks the dragon with his scimitar and Booming Blade. The dragon is near death already! End of turn, Legendary Action to cast Sickening Ray to cast Ray of Sickness at Zhanis
- Zhanis - Uses a Spell Scroll of Flame Strike on the Dracolich, who fails their save but uses a Legendary Resistance to succeed, taking half the damage. Then casts Sacred Flame at it, and it fails its save, taking damage. She recasts it a couple more times thanks to Accelerate, but it saves both times. When it took that damage, the energy around the dragon seemed to flicker out briefly, but as it begins to fall, it regains its energy and it look like the dragon has healed for a good portion of its health. Uh oh.
-
Round 2
- Tobias - Manifests a 6th Order Brain Overload on the Dracolich, and it fails its save, using its second Legendary Resistance to succeed, still taking a lot of damage from it! Then manifests Amplify on Kakariki again.
- Dracolich - Targets Zhanis with Finger of Death, and she BARELY makes her save, meaning she has just 9 HP remaining. Close!
- Kakariki - Blaze makes his first Death Save, and succeeds. One Success, one failure. Kakariki takes three attacks, hitting twice. End of turn, Legendary Action to cast Sickening Ray on Zhanis again, but it once again misses.
- Kemurial - Whiffs on his first and second swings, but hits on his third! Kemurial adds Strike of the Giants onto the attack for good measure, and KILLS IT! For extra flavor, Kemurial fires off a Quickened Disintegrate spell as well.
- Combat over.
-
- After the dragon dies, its auras disappear, and the rock wall that collapsed behind us crumbles, revealing a path out of here.
- Kakariki allows Blaze to pass peacefully, but then channels his powers for one minute to resurrect him back to full health. So Blaze is like brand-new, and Kakariki takes another level of Exhaustion.
- We look for loot and find some platinum and some Dracolich dragon armor that acts like Dragon Scale Mail, but can be put onto any armor for its effects. Nice!
- We've now cleared out the place entirely. We let the Duke and his folks know. Over time, guards and scholars move into the dungeon along with Ulrika, as planned. Research is done over a longer period of time. Few pieces of key info. One is that if there is a cure for Ulrika, we're going to HAVE to go to Sylvania. Second, there is info that a few of the old noble houses still living in Sylvania are actually secret vampires. It's more of a non-secret secret, but officially, there are no vampire lords or ladies that anyone knows of, but it's obvious that there are vampires there. We might be able to find some allies in Sylvania that can directly help Ulrika. And thirdly, the relic that Krieger has has been referred to as the Eye of Khemri, but in older traditions it's known as the Eye of Nagash. It's an ancient powerful talisman forged in Nehekara, tied directly to Nagash, the first Necromancer. It's understood that it grants absolute power to control undead and vampires, regardless of their faction.
- Some additional info is that there is some info about some spells and rituals for breach points into the realms of Chaos if we want to further pursue that side of the conflict.
- All the vents and grates in this dungeon seem to lead to a subterranean cavern where many have gone to explore. There's an nasty stench and eerie sounds coming from them if we wish to go in that direction instead.
- We decide to pursue the vampire story arc in Sylvania.
- During our two or so days of downtime, we are able to take two short rests, which is enough to rid Kakariki of his two levels of Exhaustion he had.
That's it for this session!
