[Verse 1]
Ash in the air, the sky pulled thin,
The Spirit drifts on broken winds,
Karag Dum, a wound in stone,
Veins of fire in a city overthrown.
Ghost halls breathing dust and shame,
Smeared the carvings, lost the names,
We walk through the marrow of forgotten kings,
With only the drip of sorrow that sings.
[Chorus]
The Terror moves, the Terror grows,
Carved in the rock, written in the bones.
The Terror breathes, the Terror knows,
Waits in the dark where the cold light flows.
[Verse 2]
Forges that once sang now only weep,
Hollow fires, empty keeps,
Boot prints fading in the ash,
Words in a tongue meant to outlast.
Steel and oath stitched in our veins,
We bleed the silence, we shoulder the name,
Through broken gates and blood-worn stone,
We search for what the world disowns.
[Bridge]
Not everything that burns is fire,
Not every king still wears the crown,
We carry the weight of the pyres,
And the Terror won't stay underground.
[Chorus]
The Terror moves, the Terror grows,
Carved in the rock, written in the bones.
The Terror breathes, the Terror knows,
Waits in the dark where the cold light flows.
[Solo]
[Verse 3]
In shattered halls, the last breath clings,
Twenty years or two hundred, it means the same thing,
Faces thinned by a war unwon,
Still holding lines that forgot the sun.
Hargrim’s eyes, Thangrim’s hands,
We follow their steps through broken lands,
The hammer sleeps, but the Terror wakes,
And we are the storm it won't unmake.
[Chorus]
The Terror moves, the Terror grows,
Carved in the rock, written in the bones.
The Terror breathes, the Terror knows,
Waits in the dark where the cold light flows.
[Chorus]
The Terror moves, the Terror grows,
Carved in the rock, written in the bones.
The Terror dreams, the Terror sows,
But we are the fire the Terror chose.

Private Notes
- A few relatively quiet days pass as we head toward Karag Dum. Most of the trip has consisted of monolithic structures and horrible sights of hell pits in the ground, wastelands, etc. We've seen innumerable armies marching southward. Eventually, we find a single solitary peak in the distance.
- As the Spirit of Grungni presses forward, we see Karag Dum. It seems the world itself has split open. It's a whole civilization etched into stone. Entire cities climb the sides. Bridges arch their way across gaps to connect the various civilizations. Veins of molten light pulse through the rocks. Welcome to Karag Dum.
- This is only the surface of this vast place. Dwarven structures always venture underground.
- There exist uncountable numbers of Chaos forces that surround this entire mountain civilization. Can't tell from the sky if they've made it into the city just yet, but they've organized themselves into giant war camps to protect themselves against each other.
- The city is clearly under siege, but there doesn't seem to be any movement on the walls or inside the city itself.
- Lim Dul and Kemurial ask the ship's captain whether there are active security measures that need to be overcome before we can enter its airspace and moor. He said normally, yes there would be. But he's unable to determine whether that's the case right now given the scene below.
- On one of the higher terraces, we find a battlement that juts out large enough that the crew feels comfortable dropping down ropes onto to let us venture out and see what's what.
- They won't be performing aerial strikes on the surrounding armies as even if they dropped every ordnance they had on board, they still wouldn't make a dent. However, they'll do some recon runs and if they identify any potential targets, they may take aim. But they don't want to be too hasty.
- We make our way into the vast halls of Karag Dum to begin our exploration.
- This was once a grand gate of Karag Dum, forge to withstand the tides of ages. Now we see what remains. The stone breathes dust instead of pride. Every wall here once bore carvings of the great dwarven clans detailing their history. When a hall dies, it weeps, as we hear dripping in the distance. Each pillar was shaped into the likeness of their kings. The marks and scratches tell their history of battle. It's not the mountain that's cold; it's something deeper. Something that lingers. We pass through a shattered barricade with things littering the ground. Varek's expressions hardens. These were family men taking their final stand to defend it. The runes on the walls are the writings of things that lost all sanity.
- We descend further until we come to some of the great forges. Varek says they once sang with life. You could hear iron singing throughout, but the fire has mostly burnt out. Kemurial finds evidence of more recent battles as we explore. Lim Dul approaches one of the camps and places his hand on it to determine whether they're recently warm, but there is no such sign. He asks if the fires powered just the forges, or did they also power other things, such as their defenses. Varek invites us to look to the walls. There is still a little light, but not like what it used to be.
- Lim Dul tries to determine if the remaining fires are those of the Material Plane, or those from the Planes of Hell. He doesn't get an infernal fire, but rather abyssal. He thinks it's a demonic fire. It's not your typical dwarven fire. Rory thinks if that's the case, they've already taken up residence in here and are just waiting for us to make a wrong move.
- Lim Dul looks for signs of abyssal language while Kemurial searches the camp more closely to find any other clues as to whether its regularly used or and old setup. Rory assists, being the trailfinder extraordinaire he is. Kemurial finds there are no permanent structures here at this camp. He can see outlines of dust where booted feet have trekked and maybe a bedroll or two have taken up space, but that's about it. Nothing huge. Lim Dul finds lots of abyssal language around. But there's one unifying word or phrase he keeps finding which says "The Terror" or "return". He shares this with us. Kemurial is aware of rumors of the fever pitch of the battles as reported by those few who made it out referenced that something greater than the normal forces of Chaos emerged, and that was the tipping point on the scales of what most people believed to be the fall of Karag Dum. Varek says that's true, he's heard that as well. He's heard many stories from books as well has his own family about that legend.
- As we're discussing this, something in the distance clatters. Varek perks up in hope that not everything is dead. Rory turns to go toward the sound to check it out and Lim Dul stops him. He warns Rory not to run off by himself. Rory says he's not running off, just going ahead to check around the corner. He continues forward, quietly.
- We try to stealthily make our way toward the source of the clattering.
- Finally we reach a broken causeway, looking out across a massive chasm toward the blackened throne hall. Varek says that's the hall of kings, once the place of judgment and feasting, now a tomb defiled. The throne itself... it was said that no dwarf king sat on it lightly as they bore the weight of every burden. Now it bleeds that weight back into the world. He tells us to remember this sight. THIS is what we're fighting for. Varek's emotions are clearly heightened at this sight.
- Eventually we come into another hall that actually has lit braziers. The light pours through a doorway. We make our way up to the door, which opens up into an inside battlement with a walkway with braziers. A gate stands at the far end. On the left, there's a bit that goes over a wall down into a chasm. Kemurial, Freya and Rory immediately notice the sounds of some type of creatures moving around through this door. It's muffled, as if behind a wall. Can't quite tell how far away they are. Kemurial tells us to ready our weapons. We do so.
- We move in, stealthily. We clearly hear the sounds of snarling and breathing coming from beyond the wall to our right. Rory doesn't think he can climb this 15' wall so he continues slowly and as quietly as possible.
- As Rory moves toward the corner ahead, he hears the sound of feet falling on stone. He turns around and sees a hellish canine looking creature jump down from the wall. INITIATIVE!!!
- Round 1
- Kemurial goes first. He uses Lightning Lure to pull the hell hound off the wall. He then proceeds to swing at it twice, critting it once, doing nearly fatal damage. The second swing takes it out.
- Varek's up next. He hides behind a nearby brazier and readies himself to attack.
- Rory's up. He rages, then casts Mirror Image. He moves up around the corner to see what the can see. There are two more hell hounds in the hallway around the corner. He moves back and warns the group.
- Lim Dul's up. He uses his Shadow Shround ability to give himself +2 AC, then moves up near Rory.
- Friar Karl's up next. He holds his action to cast Guardian of Faith should anything get within range of anyone.
- Hell Hounds are up now. One jumps down from the wall. Friar Karl casts Guardian of Faith in front of the Hell Hound, just as he planned. The Hell Hound then uses its Fire Breath ability on Freya and Friar Karl. Freya fails her Save, Karl succeeds. They both take some fire damage. The Hell Hound then moves, triggering the Guardian of Faith. The Hell Hound fails its save, taking 20 damage. Another hound comes in over the wall. It moves toward Kemurial before unleashing a Breath of Fire at him. However, Kemurial is immune to fire. A third hound comes from around the corner and fires its breath at Rory and Lim Dul. Rory saves, taking a quarter damage, and Lim Dul fails, taking it all. A fourth comes around the corner and attempts to Bite Rory. One of Rory's Mirror Images takes the hit instead.
- Freya's up now. Three Eldritch Blasts for the pups. They all hit.
- Another Hell Hound comes from over the wall and attacks Kemurial. It misses though.
- Round 2
- We can hear more creatures coming from the hallway around the corner.
- Kemurial's up. He Transmutes his upcast Flame Blade spell to do lightning damage. It hits, doing massive damage to the Hell Hound.
- Varek's up. He uses the Dodge action to stay out of trouble.
- Rory's turn. He takes two swings at a Hell Hound, killing it. He then takes his bonus attack on the second nearby Hell Hound, critting it and taking it out.
- Lim Dul's next. He begins chanting. His lance hits the hell hound twice. The first time knocks it prone thanks to Topple, the second takes it out.
- Friar Karl's up. He casts a couple Orisons on Kemurial and Freya.
- Hell Hounds are up. One of them recharges its fire breath. It then gets killed by the Guardian of Faith because it started its turn within its range and fails its save. Another hound gets its fire breath back, though, and it's able to get it off toward Lim Dul and Kemurial. Kemurial is still immune, but Lim Dul isn't, and takes all its damage.
- Freya's up. So anyway she starts Eldritch Blasting.
- Round 3
- We hear footsteps of paws and claws as a horde of a dozen or more of these Hell Hounds climb the wall. As they do so, we suddenly hear several thwomps as arrows fly in from a distance, taking out each and every one of those hell hounds. We then hear someone shout "KARAG!" followed by a group of "DUM!" We've got help!
- Kemurial's up. He uses Toll the Dead on a Hell Hound, sending it running. Combat over.
- Round 1
- We hear more footsteps, but different this time. We see a dwarf climb to the top of the wall. He draws his bow and aims it as us. Kemurial asks if he's willing to parlay, but he doesn't parlay with demons. He commands us to show ourselves. Rory asks him to stop, we have one of his kind. We have Varek.
- Varek steps out from behind the brazier. He introduces himself to this dwarf. A second dwarf appears on the wall. He says he knows the name, but where's the help he went to find. Varek tells him his story. Varek asks how this dwarf is alive. We all notice that these dwarves are WAY too skinny compared to what's normal. They have sunken cheeks, and don't look healthy at all. The dwarf says they have fought a game of cat and mouse through these halls and streets for at least 20 years. Varek corrects him, saying Karak Dum was attacked 200 years ago, but the dwarf doesn't believe him. Does time not progress normally here, or are these dwarves just not aware of the amount of time that has passed? Lim Dul notices that these dwarves seem to have aged only 20 years, as he's claimed. Time is weird down here.
- We need those powerful items before we can leave here. We ask for their help finding them. He says there's no time, we have to move before The Terror arrives.
- This dwarf's name is Hargrim.
- He leads us through the halls, past tons of traps that he clearly knows the locations of. Eventually we reach some secret doors that lead further down into the mountain.
- Lim Dul comments on their guerilla tactics. Rory thinks we're fighting gorilla's. He's confused.
- Kemurial tries to slyly mark their trail so we can find our way out again, but Torvald sees him and warns him not to do that. Torvald says no harm done, he understands. But they've stayed alive for so long by being overly cautious.
- Eventually we find ourselves standing in a room with a few other dwarves. There are also several guards surrounding us. They are heavily armored. Rory and Lim Dul notice that all the dwarves in this hall are carrying weapons that are clearly magical and covered in runes. As we're brought in, Hargrim approaches his father.
- The female dwarf welcomes us. We stand before King Thangrim Firebeard. Hargrim says they found us in one of the upper levels fighting off the hell hounds, and will let us speak as to our intentions. Kemurial mentions that the lands above are being overrun by Chaos forces. We've come to procure powerful dwarven artifacts to aid in the war. Thangrim says it's been 20 years, but Hargrim interrupts him saying that we claim that Karag Dum fell nearly 200 years ago. The other dwarf near them says that might be true because the winds of Chaos might have slowed time in the citadel. Thangrim continues, saying that if that's the case, it's been a long time coming, this help. But he thinks we don't come seeking help, but rather resources to fight the demons. Kemurial says he understands their frustrations, but we're not privy to prior negotiations. We didn't know they were here. We were just coming to do our due diligence. He asks us to elaborate. Rory says the Chaos forces aren't just here in the Chaos Wastes, but now are all over the world, threatening the entire population. Lim Dul says we have a representative of your kind. He introduces Varek to them. Varek says it has been 200 years since Karag Dum fell. His fathers was one of the company that Thangrim sent for help, but only now has technology been available to be able to provide this assistance. He says we came in truth seeking the Hammer of Fate and the Axe of the Runemasters. He says he's already found the Axe of the Runemasters, to which they all gasp, whispering "The prophecy!" Lim Dul asks about this prophecy. The dwarf covered in runes next to the king says when Karag Dum originally fell, it was King Thangrim who was able to drive off the Terror. He used the Hammer of Fate to strike a blow that would've killed any other creature in these lands, which drove the Terror away, but he fled, cursing saying he would return and claim the Hammer of Fate for himself and end all dwarven life in Karag Dum. His father, the previous Runemaster, lost to him only a year ago, prophesied on his deathbed that when the Axe of the Runemasters was found, that the Terror would return. And the Terror has only been back for six months. That would make sense if the axe has already been found. He asks Varek where it was found. Varek says Gotrek Gurnisson has held the axe for many years now since the last attempt to make it to Barak Varr. He didn't know it was lost. Thangrim says Prince Morek, his eldest son, drawn by what he believed was fate and duty, stole the axe from their stores and ventured out in an attempt since no word had been heard from their messengers, to rally the rest of their brethren to return. That was nearly 15 years ago and they haven't heard from him since. Varek hesitantly says that's correct, he found it in a cave in the wastes. There was the body of many beastment and other Chaos worshippers around it, but he found a lone dwarf holding the axe, dead. If Prince Morek was not there, then he died before hand on the journey. And that must've been some other dwarf carrying the axe. The King hangs his head and says he already believe he was dead, but he died alone then. Lim Dul speaks up, saying that in war, there are casualties and they further the cause of war. If he did die alone, the axe is now where it belongs to defeat this Chaos horde, and thus died a hero. In any case, what matters is winning the war. It may weigh heavy on him, but we have a war to win. The Chaos forces are flooding into civilization as we speak. We must act now. Lim Dul insists Varek needs their help, and asks if they're willing to lend that help. King Thangrim says that his son at least got the axe into the hands of someone who could use it. He says they've been carrying on the fight for twenty years. What we see in these halls are all that's left of their people. He asks how they can help. Varek says we've already sent the axe of Prague to hold the front there, but we truly came to seek the Hammer of Fate, but it's already in your hands. This weapon may be the key to turning back the tide that will sweep over the entire world. Thangrim says you've seen outside our walls, and how it's hopeless. What do we expect them to do about that? If it were possible to thwart them, they'd have done it 20 years ago. He says we have the prophecy to content with. If the Terror has truly returned, our first task will likely be a confrontation with it. But we will speak of this later. His heart is too heavy thinking of Morek. He tells us to find rest in these halls and we'll speak tomorrow. He instructs his guards to give us their best.
- Hargrim approaches us and says he doesn't know how we got here, but we look weary. He tells us to meet them in the dining hall for dinner.
- Lim Dul asks how many of them are left. They respond a couple hundred.
- Hargrim says it's been a guerilla war. At first they made bold action against the enemy. The inner city has been a few battles but most guerilla warfare now. It seems that the arrival of additional gods of Chaos' armies has turned it into a bit of a truce. They are the last dwarven foothold to have not fallen yet, that they know of.
- Lim Dul asks directly about what, or who, the Terror is. Hargrim looks around, and leans in, saying it's a towering winged creature, like a demonic warlord seething with rage, it's rage erupting in waves of fire. It wields a sword and a whip of flame. Lim Dul thinks it might be a balor, a greater demon of Chaos.
- We take a long rest.
- TNGBU.
- While waiting for the king's return, we discuss our plans on how to take out the Terror. Do we take it out here, or do we lure it into its own plane to kill it there? What will happen to Thangrim? Should he be the one to take it out himself, thus becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, possibly ending the war for far longer, if not permanently, while also ending his own bloodline? How should we approach this problem?
- We're curious as to what plans they might already have, so we continue to wait for the king's return.
- King Thangrim returns. Kemurial says we're hoping we can help each other out. We suspect the Terror may be an influential contributor to the war, so we want to deal with it, but we may also need the hammer he wields to do so. Thangrim says while he lives, this hammer will remain in his possession. But it appears he's being drawn to a fate, a doom, that has been prophesized. Kemurial says we intend to face the balor with or without the hammer. Thangrim says it seems inevitable that he join us in that fight. But he says he doesn't see a great success as they're far weaker than they were back then, but they don't back down from a fight. Lim Dul says they have something they didn't have last time, and that's us. Thangrim says hopefully that's enough to turn the tides.
- Just then a horn sounds in the distance. A dwarf runs in. "Your Majesty, the time has come. He has found us. He's practically at the front door!" Thangrim says he'd love to stay and chat, but it seems our choice has been made for us. If we're to face the Terror, I'm to face it with you. And I bring all of my Runebearers.
- He asks if we're with him. Rory holds his greatsword high and says "I'm already with you." Lim Dul and Kemurial do something similar, pledging our help to them. Thangrim orders Hargrim to take himself and his rangers to help. He orders someone else to make sure they have enough rune weapons to deal with him. He asks another dwarf to pray. He stands up and begins walking in the direction the dwarf entered from.
- We follow close behind. There are about 300 or do so dwarves joining in this fight. As we march through the main tunnel, it branches multiple times. They take various routes before exiting a mighty set of stone dwarves that leads to a large balcony with stairs on either side. We're in a hall where huge groups of people and armies are received. Spread out on the far side is a massive army, many hundreds of beastmen and Chaos dwellers. Stepping through the huge doors is the Terror, a massive balor enters. With a low thunderous voice, it says "FIREBEARD! I HAVE BEEN CALLED TO BRING YOUR DOOM, AND IT HAS ARRIVED." Or something like that. I didn't quite catch it fully.
That's it for this session!
