Private Notes
Durgeddin was a master smith who forged blades of surpassing quality and power. Centuries ago, his home was sacked by orcs. Durgeddin led the remnants of his clan to the mountains north of the town of Blasingdell and established a small, secret stronghold somewhere in the trackless wilderness.
From his hidden redoubt, he waged a decades-long vendetta against all orc-kind, until his enemies discovered his fortress and attacked it after a long siege. Durgeddin and his followers perished, and much wealth was carried away by the conquering hordes. But it’s said that the deepest and best-hidden vaults and armories escaped the looting, and that some of Durgeddin’s extraordinary blades still wait in the darkness for a hand bold enough to claim one.
You’ve come to Blasingdell, a small mining town on the northern frontier, to see if there’s anything to these stories. Your map shows that the old dwarf-hold lies about three days’ march to the north of the town. Dark, deeply forested hills rise beyond the town’s outskirts
- We meet various people throughout the town, including the mayor, the town watch, people from the inn and tavern, the temple, etc. We get some more information:
- Baron Althon, a local noble, hires the party to search for the legendary cache of weapons forged by Durgeddin the smith. He shows the characters a broken blade bearing the smith’s mark, and tells them that it was discovered near a rocky hill called the Stone Tooth. Baron Althon provides directions and promises to reward the characters richly for each of Durgeddin’s blades they recover. He will pay the characters 20 gp each just for bringing back information about the dwarven complex, and an additional 100 gp if they provide detailed maps.
- In the mining town of Blasingdell, the characters learn that orc raiders have been pillaging isolated farmsteads and camps in the hills north of the town. The local militia captured an orc warrior left for dead by its comrades and brought it back for questioning. Under the influence of a charm person spell, the orc divulged the location of the monsters’ lair, a lonely hill called the Stone Tooth. The mayor offers a bounty of 25 gp per orc, dead or alive, and the gratitude of the townsfolk to any who can permanently end the threat.
- We make our preparations to make the three-day walk north out of Blasingdell toward the Stone Tooth.
- As we travel northward, we pass through brooding pine forests and deep vales. We catch sight of a tall, steep hill, The Stone Tooth. A thin spire of smoke rises nearby, and we see a trail that leads to it.
- As we walk the path, we see that there are tracks along it. Four booted humanoids came down it within the last day heading into the forest. We decide to follow the tracks and leave the path.
- A while in, the tracks become indistinguishable amongst all the rest of the forest flora and ground. Syntax listens for anything out of the ordinary. He doesn't hear anything, but we do see whisps of smoke. There's a natural chimney coming out of one of the spires. He decides to go up and inspect it. As he gets closer, the smoke covers and obscures the area. Eventually, we find a rock chimney where most of the smoke pours out. It's wide enough for us to climb down if we wanted, but given there's currently smoke coming from it, that's probably not a bright idea at the moment. Kailen looks for other entrances into the area below, but finds none. We decide to head back to the path where we came from, noting this place's existence and state, and continue on to wherever the path leads us.
- We arrive at the mountain door.
- Jafar creates an Elixir of Resilience (which gives +1 AC for 10 minutes) and hands it to Syntax. Nice! It disappears if not used before a Long Rest.
- We climb up one last steep switchback. Debris and rubbish are scattered around the area. The path opens onto a wide ledge and doubles back sharply into the mountainside. Two bestial humanoids stand watch on the ledge. They appear inattentive and bored. We decide to pass them by and leave them alone.
- We enter a dark passageway. Syntax's Adventurer's Ring gives off enough light for him to see to make easy passage through the dark tunnels.
- We make our way ahead and see the two inattentive folk ahead. But they see us coming thanks to the light. They ask what we're doing here. Xaphan says we're expected here, but they don't believe us. One of them takes off for assistance now that they see multiples of us. INITIATIVE!!!

Round 1
- Syntax - Eldritch Blast misses.
- Jafar - Flies up for better line of sight, Fire Bolt hits.
- Xaphan - Toll the Dead, but the orc saves.
- Orcs - Kailen hears one down the hall yelling in Orcish "There are at least three of them!" Moves out of line of sight of most of us, but chucks a javelin at Xaphan, hitting. He takes off down the hall further.
- Kailen - Runs after the orc and swings Shatterspike at him, hitting and killing him.

Round 2
- Syntax - Runs around the corner, sees nothing, Readies an Eldritch Blast for the first orc that comes into his sight.
- Jafar - Moves and Dashes down the hall.
- Xaphan - Moves and Dashes down the hall.
- Orcs - Fires an arrow through an arrow slit at Xaphan, hits.
- Kailen - Moves up toward the double doors ahead. An orc with a Readied action fires off an arrow at Kailen and misses. Continues moving into a small corner to gain cover from an arrow slit.

Round 3
- Orc - Fires from a hidden arrow slit right behind Xaphan, missing him.
- Syntax - Moves up to the slit he now sees. There isn't just one orc. There are THREE. An arrow comes flying out of it and would hit him, but he casts Shield to prevent it. Sacred Flame at the front guy, he fails his save. Spellfire Flame to cast it again as a Bonus Action, and he fails his save again. Two hits for nearly minimum damage. Totally worth it (sarcasm).
- Jafar - Moves up and Dashes around the corner.
- Orcs - One in the slit near Syntax moves out of his line of sight and opens another arrow slit. Great. Another one fires at Jafar and CRITs. Can't see any others, but can hear them moving about.
- Xaphan - Moves forward out of Syntax's line of sight.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see. One of them hits Jafar with an arrow.
- Kailen - Moves up toward the doors, an orc with a Readied attack fires a shot at her and misses. Fires her own shot back at the orc, missing. Continues moving up.

Round 4
- Orc - Fires an arrow at Syntax but misses thanks to Shield. Moves away from the arrow slit.
- Syntax - Moves around the corner, Dash Action to continue up to the door. Seeing the orc now at the door, Bonus Action Armor of Agathas.
- Jafar - Moves up to the door and flies just above our heads to fit through the door. Fire Bolt at the orc just below him, hitting.
- Orcs - The one at the door attacks Xaphan with a greataxe hits, doing lots of damage to him. Can't see others.
- Xaphan - Bonus Action Healing Word on himself. Moves around the orc for flanking, attacks with longsword, hits and kills him.
- Orcs - A wall opens up to our south. Out from the secret opening steps another orc, and it comes up and closes the doors. Can't see. But we hear the sound of them barricading the door. Another can barely see Kailen and fires at her, missing. Unsure about the others, can't see them.
- Kailen - Fires at an orc and hits. One takes a Reaction to fire at her, and misses. Moves up the steps

Round 5
- Orc - Unsure, can't see.
- Syntax - Unable to open the door, steps back and Readies Toll the Dead for the first visible enemy.
- Jafar - Moves back into line of sight with an orc in the arrow slit who fires and misses Jafar. Uses Tasha's Caustic Brew to fire into one of the slits. One orc makes his save, the other fails.
- Orcs - One in a slit fires at Jafar, misses, and steps away from the window. Unsure about the others.
- Xaphan - Bonus Action Healing Word on himself again for some more healing. Will use his Action to assist Kailen in trying to open the now-barricaded doors.
- Orcs - One comes up to a window and fires a shot at Jafar and misses. Unsure about the others, can't see them.
- Kailen - With Xaphan's assistance, tries to push open the door, AND DOES! The doors crash open, revealing that the area near the door is now empty and the rope bridge has been cut. An arrow comes flying from across the chasm and misses Kailen. She moves onto the entrance platform.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see them.

- Orc - Unsure, can't see.
- Syntax - Steps in, sees the bridge has been cut, and steps back out since there isn't anything he can do.
- Jafar - Flies through the doors and uses Fire Bolt at an orc, misses.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see them.
- Xaphan - Moves into the room, Toll the Dead on an orc, but he makes his save. Moves up to the secret door and tries to find a way to open it.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see them.
- Kailen - Moves up to assist Xaphan in finding a way to open the secret door. Her perception check says she can't currently find anything to open it with.

- Orc - Unsure, can't see.
- Syntax - Moves up to find a switch to open any secret doors, but finds nothing.
- Jafar - Fire Bolt at an orc, hits for one single point of damage.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see.
- Xaphan - Toll the Dead on an orc, who fails their save.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see. But an arrow misses Jafar.
- Kailen - Looks again for a way to open the secret door again, but finds nothing.

Round 8
- Orc - Unsure, can't see.
- Syntax - Looks around for a way to open any secret doors, and finds two concealed buttons. He presses both of them. Doing so opens a previously-unknown-but-hypothesized secret door next to him. As soon as it opens, two javelins come flying at him. One misses, but the other hits. Syntax moves back around the corner.
- Jafar - Fire Bolt at an orc through the newly-opened secret door, hits.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see.
- Xaphan - Toll the Dead on an orc, but it saves.
- Orcs - One of them steps out of the secret area and whacks Syntax with a greataxe, hitting for a ton of damage, and triggering Syntax's Armor of Agathys. He now has no temp HP, so Armor of Agathys drops. The orc then moves back into the secret passage and closes the door again. Unsure about the others, can't see them.
- Kailen - Looks for the buttons with Advantage, but still can't find them. Moves to the other side near Syntax.

Round 9
- Orc - Unsure, can't see.
- Syntax - Shows Kailen the buttons and presses them again. The door opens, and a javelin flies out and misses Kailen. Syntax moves to the other side to look for buttons, but finds none just yet.
- Jafar - Expeditious Retreat to move down into the chasm. He ties a rope around himself
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see.
- Xaphan - Toll the Dead at an orc, and the orc fails its save.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see.
- Arthas - Finally makes it into battle after being stuck in the bathroom looking for leaves big enough to wipe with. Moves into the chasm room near Kailen and passes her, moving into the secret passageway. Uses Action to Dodge.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see.
- Kailen - Moves into the northern secret passage. Three javelins come her way. One hits. She continues further in and swings Shatterspike at an orc, hitting.

Round 10
- Orc - Unsure, can't see.
- Syntax - Attempts to find the buttons down south again, and does!. He opens the door. An orc swings his axe at the now-exposed Xaphan, missing. A javelin comes flying in at Xaphan as well, also missing. Moves onto the stairs in front of the doors, just out of line of sight of the arrow slits.
- Jafar - Attempts to tie the bridge up on the other side. He's able to get one side of it tied up again. Will need to try the other side next turn.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see.
- Xaphan - Longsword attack at an adjacent orc, misses.
- Orcs - One tries to grab Xaphan, but he resists it. Another throws a javelin at Kailen, hitting.
- Arthas - Moves into the northern secret passage to help Kailen. Uses Devastator ability to allow her to join him in an attack immediately. Arthas's flail CRITs an orc, taking him down! Kailen's attack with Shatterspike misses, unfortunately. Bonus Action Baleful Interdict on another orc.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see.
- Kailen - Swings Shatterspike and CRITs, killing her target.

Round 11
- Syntax - Moves in, Eldritch Blast at the orc near Xaphan, hits. Moves back out again.
- Jafar - Tries tying the rope, but it slips. Going to have to try again.
- Orcs - Unsure, can't see. But one chucks a javelin at Xaphan and hits.
- Xaphan - Misses with his longsword.
- Orcs - One attempts to shove Xaphan backwards, but Xaphan fails his save, getting shoved backwards five feet. The orc moves out and places himself between Xaphan and Syntax. Unsure about the others, can't see them.
- Arthas - Swings his flail at an orc, hits and pops the seals, killing him. Moves for flanking position.
- Orcs - Moves up to Xaphan and swings his greataxe at him, hits.
- Kailen - CRITs another orc and kills him. Bonus Action Second Wind. Moves back into the main room.

Round 12
- Syntax - Moves up, Shocking Grasp on the orc near Xaphan that he can reach, and hits! Now this orc can't take an opportunity attack until its next turn, hopefully giving Xaphan a chance to get away since he's looking pretty hurt.
- Jafar - Finishes tying off the rope on the other end, restoring use of the bridge! Moves back across the chasm near the entrance.
- Orcs - Moves up to Xaphan attempting to knock him Prone, and does so successfully. This isn't good.
- Xaphan - Uses half his movement to stand back up, Action to Disengage and move near the doors next to Syntax. Bonus Action Healing Word on himself since he was pretty hurt.
- Orcs - Moves next to Xaphan, takes the Help Action to assist the next orc that tries to attack Xaphan.
- Arthas - Dash Action for extra movement to get back to us.
- Orcs - Attacks Xaphan with the assistance from the other orc and hits.
- Kailen - Moves up to an orc in flanking position and whiffs.

Round 13
- Syntax - Swipes his dagger at the nearly-dead orc and kills it! Takes a swipe at the other nearby orc as a Bonus Action and hits him as well!
- Jafar - CRITs with Fire Bolt, and kills an orc!
- Xaphan - Longsword attack hits the last remaining orc, but he's still standing.
- Arthas - Hits the last orc with his flail and kills it!
- Combat over. We each receive 180 xp.

- As we finish the encounter, doors opposite the chasm open with a slam. Only Xaphan can see it from here, but we can all hear it. We hear many feet clattering. From past it, we hear a deep voice that says "The Great Ulfe will suffer no intruders. CHARGE!"
